And So It Begins / by Derek Neuland

After waiting all day for UPS, my new camera finally arrived at my doorstep. This is my new Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1 with a Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 lens. First impressions:

  • It's a great size: not too big and not too small.
  • The weight is exactly in the range I was hoping it would be. I remember with my DLSR my hand would get tired/sore after 5-10 minutes of continuous shooting. After holding/shooting with this for the same amount of time I don't think I will have the same problem.
  • The body is metal and feels really solid.
  • It has a lot of options. I have a feeling i'll never use a lot of the pre-set filters/settings aside from obligatory tests. I prefer to shoot in RAW and edit photos outside of the camera.

Since the camera came later than I expected (and then I had to wait 2 hours for the battery to charge), I didn't get a chance to shoot with it until the sun was already setting. Here are a few samples of my first shots with it. I plan on going for a long walk tomorrow to get some more practice with it before I leave for my trip to Chicago on Friday night.
